Dear Publisher
A Happy New Year to you and yours! I personally have had a big month as a New York Jets fan, but starting the new year brings so many opportunities besides football (candidly, I wouldn’t have said that if the Jets were still in it—I’m nothing if I’m not honest), and I’m happy to talk to you about some of them.
Besides the last season of “Lost” coming in 2010, there are also big industry events such as The Bologna Children’s Book Fair taking place in March, and BookExpo America taking place in May with some huge changes. Read below for information on both! Finally, check below for some quick hits, including a recap from ALA Midwinter!
At Combined Book Exhibit, we like to think we have some great foresight, so check out www.CombinedBook.com for a year’s worth of events; plan for your full year and the future at www.PubMatch.org; and check out more than a year’s worth of reading material at www.TheBookCheckout.com. That’s foresight for ya!
So Happy 2010, Happy final season of “Lost,” and Happy Reading!
Seth Dellon

In 1998, Scholastic paid author J.K Rowling $105 thousand for the rights to publish her first novel, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” The rest, as they say, is history—history made at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. And while this story certainly comes with the quantifier, “Results NOT Typical,” it also comes with the adage, “You Gotta Be in It to Win It,” which is why the Bologna Children’s Book Fair attracts so many each year to its halls.
The Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which takes place every March in Bologna, Italy, is the oldest, biggest and most prestigious book fair exclusively for children’s material, bringing together tens of thousands of authors, illustrators, publishers, rights agents, distributors, translators, librarians, booksellers and so much more specializing in the genre. Having your book on display at the show one way or another makes it available for rights and translation sales, bookstore and library acquisitions, distributing transactions, and a lot of other opportunities that comes with the breadth of people in attendance.
If you gotta be in it to win it, and you don’t want to be there, Combined Book Exhibit is happy to offer you the opportunity to have your book on display without the cost and hassle of traveling and attending yourself. Simply click here to get started.

For those with their finger on the pulse of CBE—or perhaps even the casual CBE observer—you already know that The New Title Showcase (which can be found at www.NewTitleShowcase.com) is our venture and partnership with BookExpo America. While New Title Showcase is heading into its sixth year in 2010, the format has been nothing but successful and doesn’t really require change. BookExpo America on the other hand made some huge changes for this year.
First and foremost, one of the most significant behind-the-scenes-while-at-the-same-time-very-much-in-the-forefront-changes that has been made has been the promotion of former Event Director (and CBE friend) Lance Fensterman to a position outside of the show, and the concurrent promotion of former #2 in command (and long time CBE friend) Steve Rosato to Fensterman’s former position. It is with huge congratulations that we welcome Steve to the new post! Steve brings with him over a decade of experience on BookExpo America, a great report with exhibitors, and the knowledge on what works and what doesn’t work for the show. With Steve at the helm, we can all expect a smooth—and most importantly—a logical and knowledgeable transition into the other new changes.
The most obvious and well publicized change is in BEA’s new format, from three days on the weekend to two days in the middle of the week. The changes have been debated and justified many times over in the past few months. With those changes, has come BEA’s rebranding. See the top here for their new logo. Looking for an explanation of the new logo? Check out the new BookExpo America Blog—The BEAN (short for BEA News)—at http://bookexponews.blogspot.com. Constant updates on the constantly changing event can be found there and at the official BookExpo America website here.
No matter your stance on the changes, there’s sure to be some excitement as they all unfold, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Speaking of the American Library Association, we’re partnering with them yet again to make their Annual Conference in June even better. Last year with cookbooks, and this year with cookbooks, travel, romance and mystery, we’re excited to help them create awesome pavilions to make the attendee experience even better. Go to www.thebookcheckout.com/alapavilions to learn more and register your books for participation!

With the New Year here, and a new year’s worth of trade shows, it’s never too early to start planning, especially for those big international shows where schedules fill up quickly! A lot of people have had great success doing so via www.PubMatch.org where you can do it for free! Simply create a free account, and search the network for those attending the shows you’ll be attending. Send them a message, and watch your calendar fill!
