Dear Publisher

It’s a refreshing time of year for our industry, one full of opportunity. Not only do we have the remainder of 2009 and the prospect of 2010 ahead of us, but with The Frankfurt Book Fair recently wrapping up its 61st annual meeting, the thought of recapping all we’ve learned and applying it to ourselves and our upcoming plans gives way to even more opportunity.

Opportunity is the theme of this month’s newsletter as below you can read about three fantastic opportunities, both through Combined Book Exhibit and our cohorts. Find out about great new venues to display your books with us, a learning opportunity from some experts in New York City, and an awarding opportunity from our peers at The Independent Book Publishers Association

There is always opportunity abound at PubMatch.org and CombinedBook.com, as well as over 50 thousand opportunities to find something for your bookshelf at The Book Checkout, so be sure to keep your screens focused on those sites.

In the mean time, continue below for a Happy Reading opportunity!

Children's Books Galore...

In the grand scheme of things, there are a lot of book fairs each year. From the huge and far reaching types like the Frankfurt Book Fair to the quaint and targeted (though sadly defunct) BookExpo Canada, it’s not hard to find a business oriented book fair in any region of the globe. However, when searching the corners of the Earth for places to exclusively hold children’s book business, the pins in the map fall at an alarming rate.

Luckily, there’s the long-running mainstay Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Bologna, Italy. For more than 45 years, BCBF has offered over 20 thousand square meters of exhibit space, and full schedules of programming all centered on children’s books, the children’s book business climate, and the spread of children’s material and ideas around the world. Though the economy has seemingly effected every aspect of business this year, the 2009 Bologna Children’s Book Fair may have had slightly smaller numbers in terms of people and space, but the numbers of deals and satisfied reports are as steady as ever.

Piggybacking on the steam of Bologna heading into 2010, a new worldwide venue for children’s material is popping up in an untapped region as the first annual Dubai International Children’s Book fair looks to debut on February 3 in Dubai, UAE. The third major fair taking place in the UAE, and the first exclusively for children’s material, the Dubai International Children’s Book Fair offers a full exhibit hall, including a rights center and book store, and a US/UK collective.

That US/UK collective in Dubai is your chance to be a part of this first ever children’s book fair in the region. Simply head over to www.PubMatch.org/DICBF to register. Or, if you’d like to go the more convention route and put yourself on display in Bologna, check out the Combined Book Exhibit registration right here.

Lessons on E-Books...

One of the overwhelmingly popular topics at the recent Frankfurt Book Fair was e-books: how to read them, how to publish them, and perhaps most importantly, their place in rights discussions. While the former topics might be better served for the technology industries than that of publishing, there’s no question that the latter issue is one for us and our peers, which is probably why The Frankfurt Book Fair, Association of American Publishers, Association of Educational Publishers and Association of American University Presses are teaming up to present “Next Steps for Digital Globalization: Selling and Buying International E-Publishing and Digital Rights Management Seminar.”

The seminar, which will take place in New York City’s Levin Institute on November 12, will feature ten sessions covering different aspects of the e-book debate, from legal issues to formats to possible markets. Speakers and presenters include Leslie Hulse, Vice President, Digital Business Development, HarperCollins Publishers; Maja Thomas, Senior Vice President, Digital and Audio Publishing; Nancy Ziser, Director of Digital Rights, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; Edward McCoyd, Executive Director for Digital Affairs, Association of American Publishers and others.

Opportunity for Indies...

Among the many fantastic groups that advocate, educate and congregate independent publishers, The Independent Book Publishers Association (or IBPA) is perhaps the most revered. Founded in 1983 under their original name, Publishers Marketing Association (or PMA), IBPA has since been a voice and tool for independent publishers from across the country, sticking to their mission to “advance the professional interests of independent publishers. To this end, IBPA provides cooperative marketing programs, education and advocacy within the publishing industry.” (See CBE’s 2007 profile of the association here)

While their status among the top of publisher associations gives them a favorable outlook, so does having their name attached to their various offerings, which is one of the reasons why The Benjamin Franklin Award is so highly regarded. The award, which awards excellence in independent publishing, is given in over 50 categories and the winners are announced at IBPA’s Publishing University (held just before BookExpo America).

Entries for the 2010 Benjamin Franklin Awards are now being accepted. To learn more, see the categories or enter your title(s) for consideration, head over to http://ibpabenjaminfranklinawards.com/.
