Dear Publisher
Welcome to fall! Fall is my favorite season, what with all the pumpkin-related food and drink, football (my NY Jets are 3-0 as of this writing!) and on the scheduling front, the start of the fall show season! Aside from all the domestic shows (mostly state library associations), there’s the big elephant in the room: The Frankfurt International Book Fair. Check below for a really, really, really quick preview of what’s standard for the show, and a couple things new for 2009.
Internationally, Combined Book Exhibit is finding itself spread out, and the Arab World is a logical place to target, with its rich markets, populated emirates, and dedication to education. We’ll be working with two different fairs in the region in the coming months to mount two very special exhibits, each of which you can read about below.
Until next time, Happy Frankfurt and Happy Reading!

| Frankfurt Book Fair Preview... |
At this point, I think it’s safe to say that if you’re reading this newsletter, you’re plenty familiar with The Frankfurt Book Fair. At this point, I think most of the world—including those that don’t even subscribe to this newsletter—have at least heard of the event (See: “Proposal, The” starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds). Luckily, the Frankfurt Book Fair knows its place in the world, and tries its hardest to balance “more of the same” with “a whole bunch of new stuff” each year to try to accommodate everyone.
More of the Same:
Here are a few things you can expect this year at FIBF that are common for each year:
· Eight halls packed wall to wall with over 7.5 thousand exhibitors from all over the world
· Almost 300 thousand attendees
· Seminars, panels and educational programs
· Lots and lots of walking and a whole lot more.
For those looking for something new each year:
· Country of honor: While there IS a country of honor every year, it is different each year. For 2009, the Country of Honor is China, so expect lots of programming and events surrounding the Chinese publishing industry and market.
· Tools of Change: TOC is a great educational conference for those interested in publishing technologies, particularly e-books, e-publishing, mobile reading and more. Usually in NYC, this year at FIBF!
· Specialized Content: While there are educational forums each year, they change to face the needs of the current time. This year, check out more on comics, digitization, nonbooks, games and more.

| Serving New Markets... |

For the past few years, Combined Book Exhibit and our sister company American Collective Stand have been following the demand and working with trade shows in the Middle East to bring US publishers to the forefront of this wealthy market. We’re happy to announce new additions for 2009 and 2010 in this growing marketplace!
Sharjah World Book Fair: Once again, we’ve been contracted by the Sharjah World Book Fair, and along with The London Book Fair to create an exhibit of English language books. While the exhibit is invite only, it’s the first step towards growing the US presence at this important fair. To learn more about the exhibit, head to www.bookwinnersandbestsellers.com.
Dubai International Children’s Book Fair: For the debut of their children’s book fair, organizers in Dubai have asked us, along with the UK Publishing initiative (a partnership between The London Book Fair and Publishers Association of the UK) to create an exhibit of English-language children’s books to be featured at the fair. DICBF is the first venue of its kind in the Middle East, and, along with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, is a great way to reach a worldwide audience for your children’s material. | Quick Notes... |
The New York Center for Independent Publishing’s “The Next Chapter in Publishing” event, for which PubMatch/CBE was a sponsor, has been temporarily rescheduled for February, 2010. No set date has been announced however. The event was originally scheduled for October 2.
Just a reminder that at www.PubMatch.org, you can sort your searches by trade show, and it’s a great way to make those last minute Frankfurt appointments!
Registration is live for 2010 venues! Head over here to check out the 2010 schedule, and here to create an account/log in to register!
Remember that Ohio Library Council 2009 has been cancelled, but that has made room for Michigan Library Association. There’s still time to register for Michigan and still reach the Midwestern library market in 2009! Click here to register.
