Dear Publisher

First, I'd like to apologize for the lack of images below.  I'm on the road currently, and don't have all the resources I'd like to jazz this thing up a bit.  That's not to say there's not good stuff below, because there is--at least if you ask me!

Read below for some good, and very brief notes on International Rights, a quick preview of Bookexpo America, and a quick recap of the good news from London Book Fair.

Remember, The Book Checkout, CombinedBook.com, Comblogged Book Exhibit and  PubMatch are always here for your benefit!

Happy reading!

International Rights?...

With Bologna, London and Bookexpo all having their events in consecutive months, the March-May stretch has an international book fair focus for many in the industry. For a lot of the seasoned vets in publishing, international fairs draw one logical output: International Rights Sales. For those unfamiliar, this is tough territory. On March 22nd, I attended a seminar hosted by the Frankfurt Book Fair (and taking place at the Bologna Book Fair) regarding this very issue. Here are some of the things I learned:

Why seek translation rights? International rights in many cases include translation rights. If your book is published in English, and you want to sell more books in foreign countries, perhaps finding a French publishing partner will benefit you and help you sell a lot more books.

How do you do it? First, you need to find a partner (which can be done in many ways, including having your books at an International Book Fair, or putting them up on www.PubMatch.org). Once you’ve found your partner, it’s time to hammer out the details, which means contracts. Unless you’re an expert, this also means lawyers, but a basic contract should outline the length of time the partner will own the specific rights, what specific rights the partner will own, the money you are to receive for the rights themselves, the money you are to receive for each sale, and what guidelines would revert the rights back to you among other points.

You probably noticed that there are two parts to this contract that determine you getting paid. International rights, while certainly about facilitating the spread of ideas, are also one of the best ways to make the most profit of the idea. It’s almost like found money.

The seminar at the Bologna Book Fair was a full 8 hours long, and can’t possibly be reprinted here. However, for all Combined Book Exhibit clients, if you’d like copies of the notes given out at the seminar, copies of the slides used in the presentation, and my personal notes, please email me at Seth@combinedbook.com.
Bookexpo America Concise Preview...

There’s a change coming to Bookexpo, and it’s more than the superficial change to NEXT year’s show (ie the change in dates and location).  Show director, Lance Fensterman, has been working his tail off connecting with as many BEA clients (exhibitors, attendees, panelists, etc.), to see how to best form the show into the best show it can be.

So what can you find at BEA 2009? Aside from the New Title Showcase and the standard exhibit hall, BEA is making a concerted effort to “put the book first,” and part of the method for doing this is to put the authors front and center. BEA will feature many “author stages” on the show floor, where you can see authors doing Q&A with other authors, journalists, or other industry and non-industry folk.

In part of making BEA a more global event, the 2009 event will feature a Market Focus, much like those at the London Book Fair or the Country of Honour in Frankfurt. This year’s Market Focus will be on the Arab World, and will feature loads of exhibits and programming surrounding the focus.

BEA will also have its traditional programming, from the “Editor’s Buzz” panels, to library oriented planning, to the plethora of author signing and author breakfasts. Part book fair, part pop-culture event, BEA is reinventing itself starting now, and 2009 will be your first chance to check out some of the changes. Learn more at www.Bookexpoamerica.com
2009 London Recap...
While overall exhibit space was down from last year, it was hard to tell otherwise that the London Book Fair was feeling the economy. With busy appointment schedules, full aisles of traffic and program rooms filled to the brim, it seems as though no matter the economic climate, business must still get done.

This year also marked the third year for the London Book Fair New Title Showcase, and I think it will go down as the year that the NTS came into its own. Thousands of catalogs were distributed, and the exhibit was near full the entire show. Reputable visitors, including buyers from major chains, and high-up executives from large publishing houses took the time to see the books in the New Title Showcase (and even filled out inquiry forms to be mailed to NTS participants soon).

It’s a safe bet that even though the exhibit hall was smaller last year, next year it will be right back to normal. The American Collective Stand was a few stands smaller than in previous years, but it’s already been said that that space should be filled right back up next year.

Overcoming the economic climate of this year, there’s no question that The London Book Fair is THE spring event for the publishing industry.
