Dear Publisher!
Show season is in full swing, and the biggest of them all—The Frankfurt International Book Fair—is finally here. You can already hear the chatter around the office: “I can’t believe its time for Frankfurt already!”
Check below for some info on that biggest fair ever, and a bit of good news from Sharjah. Finally, there’s a quick note on some other events happening on this side of the pond.
I’ll be making my first trip to Frankfurt this year, so be sure to follow Comblogged Book Exhibit for a rookie’s first impression in real time. Combinedbook.com and The Book Checkout are also always here for your benefit.
So, to all of you making it to Frankfurt, I wish you safe travels. And for EVERYONE, I wish you happy reading.
Seth

The Must-Participate-er:
|
| |

Another October is upon us, which means that most everyone in the publishing world will have their attention on Germany, where the 60th annual Frankfurt International Book Fair is taking place from October 15th-19th. Although it is the 60th anniversary of the fair—which will bring some additional programming and celebrating—this year’s fair will still be just what everyone expects: the biggest meeting on Earth for the publishing world.
Over 250 thousand people will make their way through the multiple halls of the fair, each with a purpose ranging from buying and selling books for distribution rights to those just looking to network. Full days of educational programs, multiple different focus discussions and sessions, and other general programming just add to everything to plan for.
Each year, the Frankfurt International Book Fair welcomes a Guest of Honor. This year’s Guest of Honor is the country of Turkey. There’s a whole list of programs available specifically focusing on Turkey, and the Turkish publishing market. The Guest of Honor programming is a great way to learn more about a thriving publishing market that might be flying just under your radar.
With all of the important programming and people converging at the fair, the Frankfurt International Book Fair is an event that anyone within the publishing industry would consider a must-participate event. If you plan on attending, visit the fair’s official site at www.book-fair.com, a great resource for making the most of the fair, and the time leading up to it.

Better Than Expected: |

After only a little over a month, the bookcases scheduled to hold all the great books at The Sharjah World Book Fair’s Award Winners and Bestsellers Exhibit have filled to the brim. With over 1 thousand books already registered, and just a few more lists still to be added, registration unfortunately has to shut down early—a small negative to such a great, positive exhibit.
The Award Winners and Bestsellers Exhibit features books that have won one or more reputable literary awards, and/or have been featured on one or more published bestseller lists. This debut exhibit features books that have won The Pulitzer Prize, awards from the American Library Association such as The Newbery and Caldecott Medals and Alex Awards, Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Titles, Mom’s Choice Awards, and many, many more. New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and other bestsellers are also included.
Publishers participating include several large houses such as HarperCollins, Random House, Simon and Schuster, Workman, Macmillan and more from both the US and UK. Major academic publishers, like Columbia and Princeton Universities, and more have also included large lists. As with most Combined Book Exhibit shows, there are also a large number of small and independent presses participating.
The Award Winners and Bestsellers Exhibit will be taking place at the Sharjah World Book Fair from October 29th-November 7th. To see all the great titles and publishers participating, please visit www.bookwinnersandbestsellers.com.
