Update From Bologna I am very much at fault here for not posting, so let me give you a quick little update in the few minutes before the show officially opens: The food is amazing, and the city is beautiful!!! On a more official note, set up was fairly smooth, but in the three days we were here setting up before the show opened, we can already get a sense of how laid back this is going to be. As I type this, just minutes before the show's opening, some of our neighboring booths are still not set up. This is no Frankfurt, I can tell you that. Rumor has it that the whole show is a joy, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it goes. There's a huge illustration exhibit at the entrance to the fairgrounds at which I plan to spend a lot of time (if I can get out of the booth). The fair is spread out between four halls, with the majority of American publishers and companies here with us in hall 26, so all the foreign publishers will know where to find us. The fair's organizers and management are very happy that we and The American Collective Stand are back, so we have a prime spot. Fear not: if you have a book in the collective, it will be seen! I spent all of yesterday in a seminar about International Rights. It was seven hours of intensive "training," and I'm looking forward to getting out all of the information I've picked up onto you one way or another, so be sure to check out the next issue of the CBE Newsletter, and keep on eye on PubMatch. Speaking of PubMatch, it's growing daily! And, while we're here in Bologna, we plan on getting the word out and spreading the international flavor. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out www.PubMatch.org! It's free and useful (and free)! More tomorrow (or later today). ...03/23/2009 12:03 AM Post Comment | Read More> Heading Out I'm leaving in a few hours to head to Bologna for the book fair. I couldn't be more excited! Keep checking here for updates from Italy, about the show, about the food, and about anything else I can think of (but I'll try to keep it book related). Drop me a line if have any words of encouragement, meal recommendations or questions! seth@combinedbook.com. See you from Italy! ...03/18/2009 07:03 AM Post Comment | Read More> My Bloggy-Wog A bit less than a year ago, I was wondering around Piccadilly Circus, while at the same time, my boss Janet was attending the British Book Awards. The next morning over breakfast, Janet retold me all the details she could remember, including seeing J.K. Rowling, these two talk show hosts that were incredibly famous (who she of course had no familiarity with), and of seeing this wild-haired man who’s name she couldn’t remember, but knew that he had won an award for a memoir or autobiography called “My Booky-Wook.” When she looked in the program and read that his name was (and still is) Russell Brand, I knew the name immediately.
Of course, I knew the name immediately not because of his level of fame—or as the case may be, infamy—but because he was in a movie that was about to come out at the time called “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” While the movie didn’t take off quite as high as other movies associated with that particular producer’s other movies (namely, “Knocked Up,” and “The 40 Year Old Virgin”), something about Brand stuck in America. Or at least had some adhesive too it. Brand would soon host the MTV Video Music Awards (for some reason), and completely bomb. Fast forward to, well now. “My Booky-Wook” is now available in a store near you, right here in the US-of-A. Do you know who Russell Brand is yet? It’s quite possible you do not. I however had the pleasure of seeing his stand up performance last night (and quite literally walking right into him). Brand has no qualms with his infamy in his home country, or his lack of fame here in America, but it all adds to his charm. How often do we read the memoirs of someone we don’t know? I do it all the time. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this particular book(y-wook) though, and putting some of the stories behind the jokes into context.
