EasyRead Formats
Our EasyRead format has been designed to make reading easier for
all kinds of readers. EasyRead books have been optimized to
improve both word recognition and ease of eye tracking by
adjusting word and line spacing. Line spacing has been increased
to stop the eye moving to adjacent lines, but is still close
enough for the line above and below to be used as an eye
tracking guide. End-of-line hyphenation has been minimized.
EasyRead Super Large Formats
Our EasyRead Super Large
Formats have been designed
to make reading easier for
people with a broad range of
vision issues. The EasyRead
SuperLarge books are
available in:
BRAILLE
ReadHowYouWant produces
Grade 2 (contracted) Braille
files and has developed a
house style that supports
automated transcription
while maintaining accuracy.
These files may be read with
a refreshable (electronic)
Braille display or embossed
to make traditional Braille
books.
Our Braille is transcribed
using the Carnegie Mellon
Dictionary, and only the
words found in the
dictionary are contracted.
Therefore, it is easily
understood by anyone with a
reading knowledge of
Braille. We do not split
words at line ends because
this makes reading more
difficult, particularly for
newer Braille readers. We
are working with several
organizations to produce
Braille books for library
use.
DAISY
A DAISY book is a special
kind of electronic book for
persons with reading
difficulties. DAISY books
play on DAISY players. These
are either standalone units
or computer applications.
DAISY works well for
vision-impaired and blind
readers as well as for
readers who are unable to
hold a conventional book or
turn pages. DAISY also works
for readers without special
needs because it provides
audio for any text, so it
lets anyone listen to any
book.
ReadHowYouWant is a
member of the
DAISY Consortium and has
developed a method of
automatically converting
books into DAISY format.
DAISY empowers a reader to:
- Listen to the text as it is read aloud.
- Read the text in very large fonts.
- Read the text while listening to the audio.
- Read and listen to the text without using one's hands.
- Bookmark passages.
